St. Louis Rams

It may not happen today as has been speculated, but an announcement on Jay Zygmunt's resignation is imminent, according to Rams team sources. Zygmunt is the Rams' president of football operations-general manager and has worked in some capacity with the organization for 27 seasons. Even if it doesn't come today, team sources said it will definitely come at some point this week.

Jay Zygmunt, the St. Louis Rams' president of football operations, resigned on Monday in the fallout from another terrible season. Longtime team president John Shaw is also expected to scale back his activities as part of a restructuring under new owner Chip Rosenbloom. The Rams are 2-13 this season, 5-26 the last two years and preparing for their second coaching search in two seasons.

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson got his heaviest workload of the season on Sunday, partly because his backup was being punished. Coach Jim Haslett said on Monday that Antonio Pittman was fined $25,000 after skipping practice on Saturday. Pittman, whose 23rd birthday was Friday night, was also inactive for Sunday's 17-16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

As the big, bad Panthers come to town with the hottest running tandem in the league, the Giants are hoping running back Brandon Jacobs can lug the football on Sunday and restore the team's physical presence that's been sorely missing during a two-game slide. In vogue at the moment are Carolina's DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, twin battering rams who turn seemingly innocent handoffs into game-changing runs. Out of fashion is Jacobs, whose production has dropped as the swelling in his left knee has risen. He didn't even play in last week's loss in Dallas.

Rams receiver Torry Holt said an official used the video scoreboard to call a penalty yesterday, taking away St. Louis' biggest play of the second half against the Seattle Seahawks. After the last-play, 23-20 loss to the Seahawks (3-11), Holt said the official called pass interference after watching the replay in the third quarter. "He said he looked up in the Jumbotron and saw that I pushed off," said Holt, who is in his 10th year with the Rams (2-12). "I told him I never extended my arm. It is one thing if you extended, because that is pass interference. But everything was in motion catching the football. I don't even know if I had my hands on the guy. "That was his explanation, and I told him it was a bad call."

Plaxico Burress signed a five-year, $35 million contract extension prior to the season, but that doesn't mean the Giants are seriously committed to him for the future. It is a remarkably smart deal constructed by general manager Jerry Reese and assistant Kevin Abrams, as the bulk of the money owed is not guaranteed, and the Giants could get rid of him without suffering debilitating salary-cap ramifications. According to various reports, the Giants could cut or trade Burress after the season and get $23 million taken off their books. The Giants knew Burress was not the most responsible character and made sure they were financially protected. There is $11.5 million in non-guaranteed base salaries in his contract, non-guaranteed roster bonuses of $3.5 million, non-guaranteed escalators of $5 million based on performance and $1.3 million in non-guaranteed workout bonuses.

According to sources, Nathan Vasher is expected to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a fracture in the same right hand he had wrist surgery on earlier this season. Vasher also re-injured his thumb during last Sunday's game against the Rams after getting his hand stuck between helmets while colliding with teammate Mark Anderson.

Former NFL MVP Shaun Alexander was released by the Redskins on Tuesday after getting only 11 carries in 5 games. Alexander was signed October 14 after backup Ladell Betts sprained his knee in a loss to the St. Louis Rams. Betts has since returned and resumed the No.2 position behind NFL leading rusher Clinton Portis.

After an inspiring start under new coach Jim Haslett, the St. Louis Rams are back to rock bottom. They are running out of bodies, as well. Offensive tackle Orlando Pace will be sidelined for 2 to 4 weeks with a knee injury sustained in a 35-16 loss at San Francisco that was not nearly as close as the score indicated.

Rams running back Steven Jackson will not play on Sunday against the 49ers due to his injured right thigh, and coach Jim Haslett said he will not even make the trip. Jackson did not practice on Friday. By sitting out at San Francisco, he will have missed 3 of the last 4 games. Antonio Pittman and Travis Minor will be the running backs.
