San Francisco 49ers

Mike Singletary knows what he wants to see from the San Francisco 49ers' offense, and thinks he'll need mostly new coaches to create it on that side of the ball. The no-longer-interim head coach announced two more adjustments to his coaching staff on Wednesday, firing quarterbacks coach Ted Tollner and running backs coach Tony Nathan.

Mike Martz, the headstrong coach who took St. Louis to the 2002 Super Bowl, was fired on Tuesday after one season as the San Francisco 49ers' offensive coordinator. San Francisco coach Mike Singletary announced Martz's third firing in less than three calendar years following an afternoon meeting with the veteran offensive mastermind.

The most important decision of the 49ers' future should have been made already. The York family can't help but be smitten with Mike Singletary's work in relief of Mike Nolan, and determined to lock him in as full-time head coach as soon as possible. What happens in the season finale at Candlestick on Sunday should be irrelevant. But what happens 500 miles to the south, where San Diego meets Denver for a playoff spot, could set up the second most important decision. If the Chargers lose, finishing an uninspired 7-9, Norv Turner should be fired as head coach, giving the 49ers a chance to bring him back as their offensive coordinator.

Mike Singletary was noncommittal on Friday when the San Francisco 49ers' interim coach was asked whether offensive coordinator Mike Martz would return to the club with him next season. Singletary, 4-4 since taking over the 49ers (6-9) from fired coach Mike Nolan on Oct. 20, is widely expected to get the permanent job early next week.

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson got his heaviest workload of the season on Sunday, partly because his backup was being punished. Coach Jim Haslett said on Monday that Antonio Pittman was fined $25,000 after skipping practice on Saturday. Pittman, whose 23rd birthday was Friday night, was also inactive for Sunday's 17-16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Alex Smith believes he isn't finished with the San Francisco 49ers, and he seems willing to take a big pay cut to prove it. After two months of silence on his future, the former No. 1 draft pick expressed his eagerness on Wednesday to stay with the 49ers next season, even if it means restructuring his contract.

The San Francisco 49ers put receiver Arnaz Battle on injured reserve on Saturday with a sprained foot, ending his season. The 49ers also signed running back Thomas Clayton from the practice squad to the active roster, another indication star running back Frank Gore probably won't play on Sunday at Miami. Coach Mike Singletary said Gore's availability would be a game-day decision.

Running back Frank Gore hasn't ruled himself out of the San Francisco 49ers' upcoming game in Miami even after missing his second straight practice on Thursday with a sprained ankle. Gore, who's fifth in the NFL with 1,345 total yards from scrimmage, still hopes to be in the lineup when the 49ers (5-8) go for their fourth win in five games against the Miami Dolphins.

Bills starting tight end Robert Royal and starting cornerback Jabari Greer won't play because of injuries when Buffalo hosts the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Royal hurt his hamstring in the Bills' win at Kansas City on Sunday and didn't practice all week. Greer's right knee was injured against Cleveland two weeks ago and he'll miss his second straight game.

The 49ers placed right tackle Jonas Jennings on injured reserve on Tuesday for the 3rd time in his 4 seasons with the club. Jennings underwent surgery on Tuesday on his dislocated right shoulder, which has kept him out of action since it occurred in Week 2 against Seattle.
