Interim Raiders coach Tom Cable lashed out at assistant offensive line coach James Cregg on Monday for leaving with two games left in the season and joining former coach Lane Kiffin's staff at Tennessee. Cregg told Cable of his decision to depart the Raiders on Sunday night, telling him he was taking a job with the Volunteers.

At 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday, police and paramedics entered a mobile home in San Bernardino and discovered the body of Matt Cassel's father, Greg, a devastating trauma for Cassel's family and yet another shock to the Patriots. Greg Cassel's death, at 57, threw into question whether his son will play on Sunday against the Raiders in Oakland, a must-win game for the Patriots in their late-season push for a playoff berth. Cassel did not participate in practice yesterday at San Jose State University, leaving the team to be with his family in Southern California.

The Oakland Raiders are coming to town, which is one of the only things that can put any kind of spark in the San Diego Chargers' otherwise lost season. The Chargers (4-8) were all but eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday, when they lost 22-16 at home to the Atlanta Falcons while the Denver Broncos (7-5) were winning their third straight road game, 34-17 against the New York Jets.

Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter has been fined $7,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct during Miami's 48-28 loss to New England on Sunday. NFL spokesman Corry Rush said on Friday that Porter was fined for verbally abusing the opponent after the play was over. Raiders defensive lineman Gerard Warren also was fined $5,000 for roughing the passer against Denver.

The Raiders' head coaching position is about as stable as a position on Wall Street, but that has not stopped NFL hopefuls from putting their names into consideration. Multiple Raiders sources said on Sunday that Jim Fassel, 59, expressed interest in being interviewed again, reaching out to managing general partner Al Davis with a note to remind him of their longtime relationship and his admiration for the Raiders' organization. "He's the 1st to express any real interest" in being interviewed, one source said.

Raiders wide receiver Javon Walker will undergo ankle surgery and will probably miss the remainder of the season. No official announcement was made and interim coach Tom Cable did not mention it during his daily meeting with the media, but Walker informed reporters on Thursday that his season is over after injuring his left ankle during Oakland's 17-6 loss to Carolina last Sunday.

It was widely reported on Tuesday that Raiders interim head coach Tom Cable stripped offensive coordinator Greg Knapp of his play-calling duties. Not quite. Numerous Raiders sources confirm managing general partner Al Davis was the one who informed Knapp he no longer would call plays this season. Cable was responsible for calling the plays in Sunday's 17-6 loss to the Panthers at the Coliseum.

Stats Inc. came up with this illuminating stat about DeAngelo Hall's horrid play so far, He surrendered 40 receptions for 556 yards this year, more receiving yards than any other cornerback allowed through 9 weeks. Part of that is because his counterpart, Nnamdi Asomugha, is so good and QBs do not want to throw at his side. However, Hall cost the Raiders 2nd and 5th round picks last April, and then this big cap hit for 8 lousy games. For a guy who made Oakland give up so much, Hall, you had think, would at least be competent.

It is been more than 3 decades since a QB played a game as poorly as Jake Delhomme did and still finished up on the winning side. That is what facing a team as bad as the Oakland Raiders will do. Delhomme threw a touchdown pass on the opening drive but completed only 6 other passes whilst throwing 4 interceptions in the Panthers' 17-6 win over the Raiders on Sunday.

The Raiders registered quite the tremor when they released cornerback DeAngelo Hall on Wednesday, an 8.0 in terms of millions paid for 8 games of service. Thursday brought the aftershocks, minor in comparison, but with enough oomph to create some locker-room jitters. Interim coach Tom Cable said there would be more lineup changes, with the most striking being that 2nd year player Mario Henderson will share playing time with left tackle Kwame Harris against the visiting Panthers on Sunday.
