New York Jets

Bill Cowher doesn't plan to coach in the NFL next year, and will stay with CBS Sports as a studio analyst. Cowher was recently wooed by the New York Jets, but said during "The NFL Today" on Sunday that he's taking it "year to year." "It's a privilege and an honor to be a head coach in the National Football League," Cowher said.

The Jets' interest in Mike Shanahan is getting warmer, a person familiar with the team's thinking told the Daily News on Thursday. With Bill Cowher out of the picture, and with no proven head coaches on their list of known candidates, the Jets are taking a hard look at the former Broncos coach, who was fired on Tuesday in a move that sent shock waves throughout the NFL. As of late Thursday, it was unclear if the Jets had reached out to Shanahan, but they are expected to do so.

As the Jets continue to compile a list and schedule interviews for their vacant head-coaching job, there are some in the organization who might not mind having to find a new quarterback as well. Nobody associated with the Jets is pressing Brett Favre to make a decision on his future, in part because they don't want to be seen as the team that ran a future Hall of Fame quarterback out of town.

The Browns' strong interest in fired Jets coach Eric Mangini could impact their search for a front-office executive, a league source with knowledge of the situation said on Thursday. The Browns interviewed Mangini on Tuesday night and were impressed with him. They interviewed Patriots Vice President Scott Pioli on Wednesday and liked him, too. But it's unknown if the two would be willing to work together after the Spygate scandal, so for the Browns, it might come to this: Do they hire the coach they love or the general manager they love? If the Browns hire Mangini, knowing there is evidence that the coach is the biggest indicator of a franchise's success, he'd probably already have his own right-hand personnel man in mind. If they hire Pioli, he'd undoubtedly be given the authority to hire his own coach. One thing is certain: The Browns want their coach and GM in complete synch this time, so they'd let each man choose his partner.

One of the first calls that Jet management made, only hours after firing Eric Mangini on Monday, was to the crosstown rival Giants. It did not take long for the Jets to identify Steve Spagnuolo, the Giants' defensive coordinator, as a candidate for their head coaching job. And when Bill Cowher bowed out on Tuesday, Spagnuolo shot to the top of the list. The 49-year-old is expected to interview with the Jets tomorrow - but Gang Green has plenty of competition for his services. He interviewed with the Lions and Browns yesterday, and is scheduled to meet with the Broncos tomorrow when he finishes with the Jets.

If Brett Favre wants to play another year with the Jets, he'll have to work a lot harder to win over his teammates than he did this season. "There was a lot of resentment in the room about him," a Jets player admitted yesterday. He requested anonymity because team owner Woody Johnson has stated publicly that Favre is welcome to return next season if he wants to. The 39-year-old quarterback is not as welcome with his teammates, according to this veteran. After the Jets traded for Favre on Aug. 6, the sure Hall of Famer made no effort to ingratiate himself with the already assembled team, the veteran said. He said Favre spent most of his down time at the practice facility in an office specially designated for him near the equipment room, not with teammates in the locker room, even after the media departed. "He never socialized with us, never went to dinner with anyone," the player said. Asked to describe Favre in a word, he said: "Distant."

The New York Jets met with assistants Bill Callahan and Brian Schottenheimer on Friday for the team's coaching vacancy, kicking off the first round of interviews as they seek a replacement for the fired Eric Mangini. New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will interview with the Jets on Saturday.

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen will have a lengthy list of diverse coaching candidates to consider as he tries to decide who should replace Mike Shanahan as the Broncos' head coach. Another top GM candidate is Scott Pioli, New England's vice president of personnel. In addition to Schwartz and Spagnuolo, other hot assistant coaches include Josh McDaniels, the Patriots' offensive coordinator, Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett or Atlanta quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave, a former Broncos backup quarterback who starred as at Grand Junction High School and the University of Oregon. If Bowlen chooses to go with an experienced head coach instead, Bill Cowher could be the top target, though he would be far more expensive to a franchise that still could be paying at least part of Shanahan's salary in coming years. Cowher has not coached since retiring from Pittsburgh nearly two years ago. He has been linked to the open New York Jets job, too, in recent days. Several top college coaches could be in the discussion, as well, including Southern California's Pete Carroll, who previously coached in the NFL in New England. One local college coach, Air Force's Troy Calhoun, shook his head no Tuesday when asked if he expected to be considered. Calhoun was a defensive and special-teams assistant under Shanahan and an assistant coach for the Texans under Gary Kubiak.

There will be no Cowher Power for the Jets. Bill Cowher informed the team last night he is not interested in their head-coaching job, and it could be because he doesn't want to coach Brett Favre. The former Steeler coach was the clear-cut favorite to replace Eric Mangini among Jets fans, and the team's ownership. Now, Woody Johnson must move on to Plan B. Talks between the Jets and Cowher never advanced past the preliminary stage. Sources close to Cowher said he did not want to have Favre as his quarterback, and that he also wanted to bring in people he was familiar with to handle personnel.

The New York Jets have received permission to speak with Baltimore defensive coordinator Rex Ryan for their vacant coaching job, a person familiar with the search told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
