New York Giants

One of the first calls that Jet management made, only hours after firing Eric Mangini on Monday, was to the crosstown rival Giants. It did not take long for the Jets to identify Steve Spagnuolo, the Giants' defensive coordinator, as a candidate for their head coaching job. And when Bill Cowher bowed out on Tuesday, Spagnuolo shot to the top of the list. The 49-year-old is expected to interview with the Jets tomorrow - but Gang Green has plenty of competition for his services. He interviewed with the Lions and Browns yesterday, and is scheduled to meet with the Broncos tomorrow when he finishes with the Jets.

The New York Jets met with assistants Bill Callahan and Brian Schottenheimer on Friday for the team's coaching vacancy, kicking off the first round of interviews as they seek a replacement for the fired Eric Mangini. New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will interview with the Jets on Saturday.

Pat Bowlen's search for Mike Shanahan's successor begins on Saturday with a trip to the East Coast. Bowlen and chief operating officer Joe Ellis will meet in New York with Steve Spagnuolo, who has been the Giants' defensive coordinator the past two seasons.

As their courtship with Scott Pioli continued, the Cleveland Browns postponed an interview with Atlanta president Rich McKay and talked to New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Pioli, who has spent the past nine years helping build the Patriots into a powerhouse, met Wednesday with Browns owner Randy Lerner in New York about Cleveland's vacancy at general manager.

The Browns will interview fired New York Jets coach Eric Mangini and current New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo this week for their coaching vacancy, NFL sources said. The Browns also are trying to get permission to talk to some of their other candidates, including Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. It is not yet known if they will be interested in fired Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

The Browns are one of three teams, along with the Jets and Detroit Lions, that have asked for and received permission to interview Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who is on a playoff bye week. Spagnuolo will talk to the Jets on Saturday and may do all three interviews the same day.

Magnanimous guy that he is, Terrell Owens sent Tony Romo a text message yesterday telling him that no matter what happened against the Eagles, no matter how awful the quarterback played, he would shed tears for him again, the way he did last season after Romo stumbled against the New York Giants in the playoffs. And Romo was indeed awful, unable to lead the talented Cowboys into the playoffs, or even into the end zone, as the Eagles humiliated them, 44-6, before a delighted crowd at Lincoln Financial Field. "I just told him, no matter what, I'm still the same guy who shed tears for him at last year's press conference, and I'd do it again, because that's the type of person I am, regardless of what anybody thinks or says about me," Owens said.

Las Vegas sports books favor the New York Giants over the 11 other teams in the NFL playoffs to win the Super Bowl, giving 2-to-1 odds on the NFC's No. 1 seed to repeat as champions. The Tennessee Titans are the favorite among AFC teams to win a title at 4-1, closely followed by the Pittsburgh Steelers at 9-2.

The New York Giants were already comfortably in the playoffs. The Minnesota Vikings? There was nothing comfortable about their situation, let alone their entire season. With plenty of practice in dealing with drama, the Vikings rallied past the resting Giants for a 20-19 victory on Sunday afternoon to qualify for the postseason for the first time in four years.

Four days away from the biggest game of the season, Brett Favre sounded nostalgic, beaten up, hinting at a possible shoulder injury, tired and almost resigned to the fact the Jets blew their shot at the playoffs. If the end for Favre isn't on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins at Giants Stadium, it may be soon thereafter. Favre said he'll meet with general manager Mike Tannenbaum and coach Eric Mangini soon after the season because he doesn't want things to drag on and get ugly, as they did last season in Green Bay.
