Scott Pioli, the New England Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel, is believed to be very interested in the Browns general manager job and is expected to interview for the position soon, multiple league sources told The Plain Dealer today. The Browns have been granted permission by the Patriots to interview Pioli and could talk to him as soon as Tuesday. Pioli has also been contacted by either the Kansas City Chiefs or Detroit Lions and will interview for that job as well, a source said.

Whether he's their head coach or not, Herm Edwards sees a contender taking shape in Kansas City in the very near future. "I see them competing next year," the embattled coach of the 2-13 Chiefs said in what may be his last regular-season Tuesday news conference. "I think this is going to be a good football team next year."

A woman suing Chiefs running back Larry Johnson asked a judge on Thursday to prevent Johnson's private investigators from harassing witnesses in the case. In her motion, lawyer Kirra N. Jones, who represents Ashley N. Stewart, said that her office has received complaints from more than one potential witness about "repeated contacts" from investigators working for Johnson's lawyers. Stewart and Johnson have accused each other of spitting drinks at the other at a Kansas City nightclub earlier this year.

Former Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil told me today that he has not been, nor does he expect to be, contacted about returning to Kansas City in any front-office capacity. Vermeil, who spent five seasons as Chiefs coach earlier this decade, said that talk centering on Vermeil being hired in a Bill Parcells-like football operations director position was nothing but a "big rumor."

Clark Hunt wouldn't identify any possible candidates to replace Carl Peterson as Chiefs general manager. Hunt, the Chiefs' chairman, did reveal a list of qualities he's looking for in Peterson's replacement. "I want somebody who's a shrewd evaluator of football talent," Hunt said. "(His) job will be 24/7 to think about the football team. That's the most important quality. Obviously I'm looking for a strong leader, a good communicator, preferably somebody who has experience in building a winning NFL team."

Carl Peterson made football in Kansas City fun again. But 20 years later, he's out as president, CEO and general manager after a gut-wrenching 22-21 loss to San Diego dropped the Chiefs to 2-12 this season and 2-21 since mid-October of 2007.

Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, and they wouldn't mind if he celebrated by suiting up against the Chiefs.

One Jets offensive player, who spoke under the condition of anonymity because he did not want to provide bulletin board fodder for the Patriots, talked about being "sick to our stomachs" about the Jets' 19-10 loss in Week 2 at the Meadowlands. He felt the Patriots were vulnerable, particularly on defense. Not to mention it was the 1st game with Matt Cassel at QB, after Tom Brady was injured in Week 1 vs. the Chiefs. The player spoke matter of factly about how "slow" and "old" a number of the New England defenders are and how he thinks the Jets should be able to put up "a lot of points" on them tonight.

San Diego Chargers wide receiver Chris Chambers went through his 1st full practice since spraining his ankle on October 5. Chambers, who came over from Miami last year in a midseason trade, played in the Chargers' win on Sunday over the Chiefs, but his injured ankle did not allow him to start and he did not have any receptions.

A Kansas woman filed a lawsuit Monday against Chiefs running back Larry Johnson a month after saying that he spat a drink in her face at a bar and threatened to kill her and her boyfriend. The lawsuit, filed by 24 year old Ashley N. Stewart, accuses the 2 time Pro Bowler of negligence, assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent infliction of emotional distress.
