Broncos owner Pat Bowlen will have a lengthy list of diverse coaching candidates to consider as he tries to decide who should replace Mike Shanahan as the Broncos' head coach. Another top GM candidate is Scott Pioli, New England's vice president of personnel. In addition to Schwartz and Spagnuolo, other hot assistant coaches include Josh McDaniels, the Patriots' offensive coordinator, Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett or Atlanta quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave, a former Broncos backup quarterback who starred as at Grand Junction High School and the University of Oregon. If Bowlen chooses to go with an experienced head coach instead, Bill Cowher could be the top target, though he would be far more expensive to a franchise that still could be paying at least part of Shanahan's salary in coming years. Cowher has not coached since retiring from Pittsburgh nearly two years ago. He has been linked to the open New York Jets job, too, in recent days. Several top college coaches could be in the discussion, as well, including Southern California's Pete Carroll, who previously coached in the NFL in New England. One local college coach, Air Force's Troy Calhoun, shook his head no Tuesday when asked if he expected to be considered. Calhoun was a defensive and special-teams assistant under Shanahan and an assistant coach for the Texans under Gary Kubiak.

Never mind that they've already clinched the AFC South and a first-round playoff bye, the Tennessee Titans are miffed about their 13-12 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday. A letdown could be expected after securing their playoff spot last week, but a win against Houston and a Pittsburgh loss later on Sunday would have secured home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Steve Slaton wanted the ball more. So the rookie marched up to Houston coach Gary Kubiak at halftime, grabbed him by the shirt and told him so. Kubiak listened and Slaton responded with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead the Texans to a 30-17 win over slumping Jacksonville in their Monday Night Football debut.

Brady Quinn got his 1st NFL win as a starter almost single-handedly. Quinn broke his right index finger during the 1st half of Monday night's game against the Buffalo Bills, but Cleveland's new starting QB stayed in and led the Browns to a 29-27 win. Inspite of the injury, Quinn will attempt to play on Sunday when the Browns host the Houston Texans.

When Texans GM Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak get serious about the draft after the season, they may mull over using their 1st round pick on a QB. 3 things have transpired this season to make us think the Texans may must select a QB to groom to be the next starter, Matt Schaub's injury, Sage Rosenfels' contract and the success of rookies Joe Flacco (Baltimore) and Matt Ryan (Atlanta).

We move now to the topic of position security. Specifically, that of Texans defensive coordinator Richard Smith. Do not sign any long term leases, Richard. Stick with the one day laundry service. Ask someone to check the fine print in your contract. Head coach Gary Kubiak offered a very public and very harsh critique of his defense, and by extension, his defensive coordinator, after another in a growing string of embarrassing days at the office.

The Baltimore Ravens have won 4 straight, rookie Joe Flacco is showing the poise of a veteran and Ray Lewis is looking as good as ever. Scary thing is, the Ravens think they can get much better. Flacco threw 2 touchdowns and Lewis had a pair of interceptions to lead the Ravens to a 41-13 win over the Houston Texans on Sunday.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh would not name his starting running back for Sunday's game at the Houston Texans. The pecking order in the backfield became more clouded after rookie 2nd round pick Ray Rice filled in for injured Willis McGahee and ran for 154 yards in Sunday's 37-27 win at the Cleveland Browns. So, should the Ravens go with experience and start McGahee? Or should they stick with the hotter runner and start Rice? Harbaugh said the Ravens do not think of the situation as McGahee or Rice. They envision their running game as McGahee and Rice.

Houston Texans long snapper Bryan Pittman met with league officials in New York on Monday to appeal a probable suspension after testing positive for the weight-loss diuretic Bumetanide.

Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter was fined $20,000 Friday by the NFL for comments critical of beleaguered referee Ed Hochuli and his crew in Sunday's loss at Houston. On the 1st play of the Texans' drive for the winning touchdown late in the game, Porter stripped QB Matt Schaub.
