One of the first calls that Jet management made, only hours after firing Eric Mangini on Monday, was to the crosstown rival Giants. It did not take long for the Jets to identify Steve Spagnuolo, the Giants' defensive coordinator, as a candidate for their head coaching job. And when Bill Cowher bowed out on Tuesday, Spagnuolo shot to the top of the list. The 49-year-old is expected to interview with the Jets tomorrow - but Gang Green has plenty of competition for his services. He interviewed with the Lions and Browns yesterday, and is scheduled to meet with the Broncos tomorrow when he finishes with the Jets.

Not to be outdone by ESPN's Cris Carter who mentioned Terrell Owens and a "bullet" in the same sentence, NFLN's Terrell Davis had this to say on Monday on "Total Access" when the discussion turned to fixing the Cowboys: "The first guy that's got to go is T.O..." T.D. said. "T.O. I'm sorry you are a cancer. You got to go." I think T.D. called T.O. the "c" word at least three times. What is it about T.O. that brings out such tough words from a couple of guys who were pretty good players themselves? Recall that T.D., who did his time with the Broncos, is a 2-time Super Bowl champ and a Super Bowl MVP. Meanwhile, NFL Network analyst Michael Lombardi was all over Roy (WR) Williams. He mentioned Williams had questionable work ethics at Texas and with the Lions. He said he would keep T.O. and dump Williams.

Scott Pioli, the New England Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel, is believed to be very interested in the Browns general manager job and is expected to interview for the position soon, multiple league sources told The Plain Dealer today. The Browns have been granted permission by the Patriots to interview Pioli and could talk to him as soon as Tuesday. Pioli has also been contacted by either the Kansas City Chiefs or Detroit Lions and will interview for that job as well, a source said.

The Browns are one of three teams, along with the Jets and Detroit Lions, that have asked for and received permission to interview Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who is on a playoff bye week. Spagnuolo will talk to the Jets on Saturday and may do all three interviews the same day.

Two minutes into Fox's one-hour pregame yesterday, host Curt Menefee noted that panelist Terry Bradshaw last week said he'd like to see the Lions finish 0-16. "S--bag," panelist Howie Long said of Bradshaw. "I am a s--bag," Bradshaw said. That gave Long, Bradshaw and Fox 58 minutes to apologize, to express their regrets to a national audience for having ambushed it during Sunday daylight. None came.

They'd known for weeks it was possible, each loss bringing them one stumble closer to a mark no team wants - or even wants to think about. Yet when it finally happened, the Detroit Lions were still stunned, unable to find words to adequately describe the shame in their accomplishment. They are losers of historic proportion, the worst team ever in the NFL.

Cornerback Travis Fisher said he won't fly back to Detroit from Green Bay if the Lions somehow manage to find a way to beat the Packers on Sunday. "If we win, I ain't catching the plane back home," he said with a laugh. "I'll walk back to Detroit." Chances are, Fisher won't have to worry about making the 482-mile trek.

Looking for Ed Hochuli to work another Denver-San Diego game, this one with the AFC West title on the line? Forget it. Hochuli, whose blunder helped decide the first game between the Broncos and Chargers - in favor of Denver - will be a couple of thousand miles east in Green Bay on Sunday for the Lions-Packers game, where Detroit will be trying to avoid the first 0-16 season in NFL history.

You've got to be kidding. William Clay Ford Sr., with the garbage product he disguises as a football team, actually said he wanted his two-headed front-office team to RETURN next year? It's beyond belief, isn't it? On a day when the Lions players showed how truly awful they had become, the owner one-upped them in ineptitude. It was like the owner of the Titanic, as the ship was sinking, announcing, "Next I'm gonna build an airplane."

Rod Marinelli was as angry publicly on Monday as he's been in three seasons as coach of the Detroit Lions. Leading the NFL's first 0-15 team didn't do it. A question from a columnist did. Detroit News columnist Rob Parker asked Marinelli if he wished his daughter married a better defensive coordinator, taking a shot at his son-in-law Joe Barry, after Sunday's 42-7 loss to New Orleans.
