Dallas Cowboys

Deep fissures remain amongst Dallas? biggest names, personalities, and players with Wade Phillips basically intimating that he had to have a come-to-Jesus intervention with Jason Witten, T.O. and Tony Romo before Philly. Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman encapsulated all of this angst, somewhat unintentionally Monday, when talking about lack of accountability in this locker room.

The Dallas Cowboys have fired special teams coach Bruce Read, making him the first assistant ousted in the wake of a disappointing 9-7 season. Read's special teams unit made costly gaffes, including a blocked punt in overtime at Arizona that ended in a game-winning Cardinals touchdown. Breakdowns in kick coverage also beset Dallas, and Adam "Pacman" Jones fizzled as a return man.

The Browns will interview fired New York Jets coach Eric Mangini and current New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo this week for their coaching vacancy, NFL sources said. The Browns also are trying to get permission to talk to some of their other candidates, including Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. It is not yet known if they will be interested in fired Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

Not to be outdone by ESPN's Cris Carter who mentioned Terrell Owens and a "bullet" in the same sentence, NFLN's Terrell Davis had this to say on Monday on "Total Access" when the discussion turned to fixing the Cowboys: "The first guy that's got to go is T.O..." T.D. said. "T.O. I'm sorry you are a cancer. You got to go." I think T.D. called T.O. the "c" word at least three times. What is it about T.O. that brings out such tough words from a couple of guys who were pretty good players themselves? Recall that T.D., who did his time with the Broncos, is a 2-time Super Bowl champ and a Super Bowl MVP. Meanwhile, NFL Network analyst Michael Lombardi was all over Roy (WR) Williams. He mentioned Williams had questionable work ethics at Texas and with the Lions. He said he would keep T.O. and dump Williams.

The Dallas Cowboys had a minor medical emergency and some panic in the locker room on Sunday after the 44-6 loss to Philadelphia. Quarterback Tony Romo, who suffered a rib injury late in the game, collapsed in the shower and had to be helped to his feet by teammates. Romo had X-rays after being attended to by the team's athletic trainers. When he fell, teammates rushed to his aid and one player called for paramedics. Emergency help rushed into the locker room with a stretcher, which wasn't needed. Romo was helped to his feet, and appeared to have trouble breathing from the injury. Romo spoke at his postgame news conference, but had trouble moving. He also had to be helped off a short stage where he addressed the media. Romo was sacked three times and hit many other times. Brooks Bollinger replaced him in the fourth quarter.

Magnanimous guy that he is, Terrell Owens sent Tony Romo a text message yesterday telling him that no matter what happened against the Eagles, no matter how awful the quarterback played, he would shed tears for him again, the way he did last season after Romo stumbled against the New York Giants in the playoffs. And Romo was indeed awful, unable to lead the talented Cowboys into the playoffs, or even into the end zone, as the Eagles humiliated them, 44-6, before a delighted crowd at Lincoln Financial Field. "I just told him, no matter what, I'm still the same guy who shed tears for him at last year's press conference, and I'd do it again, because that's the type of person I am, regardless of what anybody thinks or says about me," Owens said.

The Dallas Cowboys aren't changing coaches. Instead, coach Wade Phillips plans to change. After seeing Super Bowl hopes fizzle into a 9-7 season that wasn't good enough to make the playoffs, team owner Jerry Jones has vowed to bring back Phillips, and Phillips vowed on Monday to do things differently.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones acts like a man who wants Wade Phillips to succeed on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. In Jones' mind, Phillips can help the Cowboys win "for the next several years." Jones indicated on Friday that he wants to keep the current coaching staff intact regardless of what happens in Philadelphia or the playoffs, should the Cowboys get that far. They can clinch a wild-card spot with a victory over the Eagles. However, Jones stopped just short of saying specifically that Phillips will return in 2009.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo seems to be over the midweek illness that caused him to miss a day of practice. "I think he's feeling all right now," coach Wade Phillips said on Friday. "He was maybe a little weak yesterday, but he's doing a lot better today. I think he'll be ready to go."

Not as barbaric as Marion Barber, not the breakaway threat of Felix Jones, Tashard Choice was merely the "other" running back for the Dallas Cowboys this season. Then Jones went on injured reserve and Barber messed up his foot. So the other guy got a chance. Three dazzling games later, Choice is no longer defined by what he isn't.
