Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis on Friday denied a report that the team would not use its franchise tag on wide receiver T. J. Houshmandzadeh. The NFL Network had made the claim on Wednesday night, citing a league source. Lewis told Bengals.com on Friday it was "an untrue report." Houshmandzadeh told the Web site the team hasn't told his agent whether he would be tagged. Regardless, a lot could happen between now and the Feb. 22 tag deadline. Franchise tags often create a contentious long-term contract negotiating environment, so by saying it won't tag a player, a team shows a good faith attempt to sign him long term. If contract talks fail, however, the tag could become a viable option again.

Reports have surfaced that Browns defensive tackle Shaun Smith punched quarterback Brady Quinn in the face last week in the weight room after a verbal spat, and there are strong indications that the reports are true. WKYC's Jim Donovan reported the punch on Sunday during the 6 p.m. news after word of an altercation broke during the game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Then, on Monday morning, Darnell Dinkins confirmed on WQAL FM/104.1 that a scuffle took place between the two and that Quinn had a mark on his face as a result, according to station general manager Chris Maduri. But one of the strongest signs that it really did happen was the fact that Crennel did not deny it on Monday in his news conference. His most telling quote was, "If it happened, it stays in-house."

Chad Ocho Cinco did not start for the Bengals, though they opened in a three-receiver set - with T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell on the field. The Bengals said the decision not to start Ocho Cinco was not "medically related" but was simply a coach's decision.

Asked if he has found out anything from his benching for a verbal fight with a Bengals coach, receiver Chad Ocho Cinco thought for several seconds before hardly smiling and giving a one-word answer. "No", he said, then tried to move on.

What does the future hold for Bengals wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco in Cincinnati? His agent is not sure. Drew Rosenhaus informed ESPN that Ocho Cinco's fate is in Bengals owner Mike Brown's hands. "We know we are not going to bully our way out of Cincinnati", Rosenhaus said. "It is going to be Mike Brown's way or no way at all. It is going to be up to Mike Brown. He's going to decide whether or not Chad's going to be with the team in the future and we will basically take a low-key approach to that."

If the Bengals are seeking retribution for his hit that broke linebacker Keith Rivers' jaw last month, Hines Ward said they know where to find him on Thursday night. Revenge factor or not, the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver expects it will be the Bengals, as usual, that end up getting the worst of the AFC North matchup physically.

Donovan McNabb expected to keep playing until someone scored, no matter how long it took. Mercifully, the NFL's rules set a time limit on terrible play. Eagles 13, Bengals 13. It could not have finished any other way.

Chris Perry's long, strange trip with the Bengals might take an unexpected turn this week. Cast out after starting the 1st 6 games, Perry had not had a rushing attempt in the past 3 games, all started by Cedric Benson. However, Benson did not practice on Thursday due to a back injury, and Perry had all of the repetitions in practice.

As it turns out, Donovan McNabb, that good communicator with wide receivers, helped Chad Johnson adjust his attitude and make peace with the Bengals. Funny how things work sometimes. Johnson said yesterday that it was McNabb who convinced him to at least attempt to be a team-1st player, shelve his personal disappointments, and act in the best interest of his teammates and organization. It was McNabb, whom Johnson called a close friend, who informed the volatile and outspoken Johnson to cool it, to rejoin his team, and to play out this season, because, as McNabb reportedly informed Johnson, millions of people would like to be in Johnson's shoes.

With 7 games left, there is no indication that Bengals QB Carson Palmer will play in any of them. The Bengals acknowledged on Monday that Palmer will miss his 5th straight game due to an injured passing elbow. Ryan Fitzpatrick will start in his place against the Eagles on Sunday.
