Chicago Bears

All over Chicago, the Bring Donovan McNabb Home project resumed on Tuesday after Jerry Angelo made it clear he hopes to upgrade the Bears at quarterback. Angelo went to great lengths to express confidence in Kyle Orton but, more than anything in a 30-minute news conference at Halas Hall, the Bears general manager established quarterback as the team's top off-season priority. It was a stunning departure for a GM who has made a career out of prioritizing defense and a strong running game. "I know that there's going to be a lot of talk about our No. 1 receiver [but] guys, it starts with the quarterback," Angelo said. "We have to get the quarterback position stabilized. And we're fixated on that."

Chicago Bears safety Mike Brown will miss the rest of the season due to a calf injury, leaving the defense without one of its emotional leaders heading into Sunday's game at Houston that could decide whether they make the playoffs. It's the fourth trip in five years to injured reserve for Brown, who left the game against Green Bay on Monday night.

It seemed so improbable just a few days earlier, the notion that the Chicago Bears would somehow slide into the playoffs. Now? Well, it still is a long shot, but not quite as long.

Robbie Gould raced over to his tee on the Chicago Bears sideline after the New Orleans Saints tried to ice him with a timeout in overtime on Thursday night. After a practice kick, Gould walked back onto the field and booted the Saints out of Soldier Field with another devastating loss.

Brian Urlacher says the mother of his 3-year-old son has stooped low in their messy custody battle. The Bears linebacker said on Wednesday he was incensed that Tyna Robertson had been quoted in a published report as saying Urlacher had painted his son Kennedy's toenails blue and made the boy wear a pink Cinderella pull-up. Robertson talked to the Joliet Herald-News, part of the Sun-Times News Group, after a Tuesday date in Will County Court. "I don't [care] what she says about me or what anyone else says about me, but she's putting my son in the paper again," Urlacher said. "He did get his nails painted. Yes. [My daughters] painted his nails. So what? His sisters were painting their nails, so he was like, 'I want to paint my nails.' He's 3 years old. Who cares? And, yes, he did have a pull-up on of his [3-year-old sister's]. But she wears his pull-ups also. His were out, so he put on one of hers. So what? It's a pull-up."

Bears defensive back Nathan Vasher has a broken right hand and will miss Sunday night's game against the Vikings when the teams meet at the Metrodome for 1st place in the NFC North. Vasher, sidelined for 3 games earlier this season with an injury to his right wrist and thumb, was hurt on Sunday.

Quarterback Kyle Orton was listed as probable for the Bears' game at Green Bay on Sunday. Orton sat out a 21-14 loss to Tennessee last week with a sprained right ankle. He was taken from the field on a cart late in the 1st half of a win over Detroit on November 2.

If Brian Urlacher has as much disdain for the Bears' cover-2 defense as many suggest, he was circling the wagons around Lovie Smith's beleaguered scheme Wednesday, protecting his head coach and, by proxy, defensive coordinator Bob Babich. Urlacher, at the center of an embattled defense that ranks 17th in the league inspite of major investments from front to back, has come into focus with 5 tackles or fewer in 4 of the last 5 games. It is not the kind of production anyone is accustomed to from the face of the franchise, who clamored for a new contract in the offseason until getting a one year, $18 million extension only before training camp. However, in a conference call with media in Green Bay, Urlacher did his best to debunk some of the growing story lines around town, namely that the cover-2 does not work in Chicago, that the Bears miss former coordinator Ron Rivera and that Urlacher is giving way to age and injury. Whilst his arthritic back condition kept him out of practice on a regular basis last year, Urlacher has not appeared on the injury report this season and said he feels like a new man at 30 and in his 9th season.

Bears QB Kyle Orton practiced on Friday for the 1st time since getting injured, but an appearance in Sunday's game at Soldier Field against the unbeaten Titans appears unlikely. Orton, who sprained his right ankle last Sunday against the Detroit Lions, was doubtful on the official injury report after working out on Friday only during individual passing drills.

Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher saw no problem with waving his hands to the fans after they booed the defense's 2nd quarter struggles Sunday against the Lions. Urlacher wiggled his fingers in the air as he departed the field at halftime, a gesture interpreted as mocking toward the jeering fans. His actions fueled criticism on talk-radio shows Monday morning, particularly from those displeased with the way the 6 time Pro Bowler has played this season. "I was only putting my hands in the air", Urlacher said Monday. "On 3rd down, when the fans are cheering and we throw our arms up for them to scream louder, what is the difference? If I choose to do it when they are booing, there is something wrong with it?"
