Carolina Panthers

From the ugliness of 1-15 to the beauty of an AFC East title. That's the Miami Dolphins' story this season. The tale was nearly as good for the Atlanta Falcons, who went from 4-12 to an NFC wild-card berth. And for the NFC South-winning Carolina Panthers, who surged from 7-9 to 12-4. Minnesota improved by two games to 10-6 and that was good enough for the NFC North crown.

The Carolina Panthers could be without both starting defensive tackles for Sunday's game at New Orleans, perhaps enticing the pass-happy Saints to run the ball. Damione Lewis missed practice for a third straight day on Friday with a shoulder injury and was listed as doubtful.

Halfback Brandon Jacobs practiced on Friday for the third straight day and was listed as questionable for the New York Giants' NFC showdown with the Carolina Panthers. "I feel good," Jacobs said after the workout at Giants Stadium. Jacobs missed the game against Dallas last weekend after aggravating an injury to his left knee in a game against Philadelphia the previous Sunday.

As the big, bad Panthers come to town with the hottest running tandem in the league, the Giants are hoping running back Brandon Jacobs can lug the football on Sunday and restore the team's physical presence that's been sorely missing during a two-game slide. In vogue at the moment are Carolina's DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, twin battering rams who turn seemingly innocent handoffs into game-changing runs. Out of fashion is Jacobs, whose production has dropped as the swelling in his left knee has risen. He didn't even play in last week's loss in Dallas.

When Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson found out last week he needed a heart transplant, coach John Fox asked his boss what the players could do to help. The answer: They're already doing it. Fox relayed the message, and his players continued their good work on Sunday, in front of their ailing owner, in a 30-10 win over the Denver Broncos.

Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, the first former NFL player since George Halas to become a team owner, is in need of a heart transplant and has been placed on a donor waiting list. The 72-year-old Richardson has been hospitalized since last week after complaining he didn't feel well. After a battery of tests, doctors determined he needed a transplant, a team spokesman said on Wednesday.

By running over, around and through one of the league's top defenses, the Carolina Panthers staked their claim as one of the NFL's top teams. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart proved a dominating tandem, and the Panthers seized control of the competitive NFC South with a 38-23 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night.

On the eve of the Carolina Panthers' biggest game of the season, offensive lineman Jeremy Bridges was arrested on Sunday night and charged with simple assault and battery and communicating threats. The charges stemmed from an incident on Saturday night involving Dom Perignon champagne and a bouncer at Villa Antonio Restaurant in Ballantyne, according to Bridges' attorney, George Laughrun, and the restaurant's manager. Bridges turned himself in on Sunday night and was expected to be released after posting $2,500 bond. Laughrun said he expected Bridges to plead not guilty. Panthers spokesman Charlie Dayton said Carolina team officials were aware of the charges and were trying to get more information.

Chris Gamble could have been one of the most coveted free agent cornerbacks in the NFL this offseason. But Gamble didn't want the uncertainty, and the Carolina Panthers rewarded him on Friday with a lucrative deal that will keep him in Charlotte through the 2014 season.

Panthers coach John Fox sat in front of reporters a day after an ugly loss and tried to whisk away all the concerns by continually bringing up the same thing, they are 8-3.
