Mike Smith won't let his Atlanta Falcons forget all the great things they achieved this season. Even after their first-round playoff loss to Arizona, Smith urged the Falcons to concentrate on the positive, which, of course, included his earning The Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year award. "This is all part of the process," Smith said of the 30-24 defeat against the Cardinals.

It was barely a year ago that the Falcons visited Arizona and returned home with a three-point overtime loss. "Our offense scored enough points for us to win," Atlanta safety Lawyer Milloy said. "We just didn't get the stops we needed at some critical junctures in the game."

From the ugliness of 1-15 to the beauty of an AFC East title. That's the Miami Dolphins' story this season. The tale was nearly as good for the Atlanta Falcons, who went from 4-12 to an NFC wild-card berth. And for the NFC South-winning Carolina Panthers, who surged from 7-9 to 12-4. Minnesota improved by two games to 10-6 and that was good enough for the NFC North crown.

When Mike Smith took over as coach of the Atlanta Falcons in January, he inherited a team still smarting from Bobby Petrino's defection and sickened by Michael Vick's incarceration. Less than an hour after watching his team clinch a most unlikely playoff berth, things are coming together much faster than even the white-haired optimist ever could imagine.

With two weeks and 32 games left in the NFL schedule, Atlanta coach Mike Smith isn't considering how other teams could help the Falcons' playoff hopes. "I am looking through my microscope instead of my telescope this week," Smith said Monday. "We can't concern ourselves with the different scenarios."

Michael Turner kept battering the Bucs. John Abraham ran right through them. With those two dominating Tampa Bay, the Atlanta Falcons managed to overcome their mistakes.

Kicker Morten Andersen, the NFL's career-leading scorer, is retiring because of knee problems. The 48-year-old Dane, who scored 2,544 points during his 25-year career, played for the Atlanta Falcons during the past two seasons but was unable to get a contract for this year.

Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jackson and several other players could learn on Tuesday the results of their appeals to the NFL of suspensions for a positive doping test. Angelo Wright, Jackson's agent, told The Associated Press on Monday that "We think it will be tomorrow."

The Oakland Raiders are coming to town, which is one of the only things that can put any kind of spark in the San Diego Chargers' otherwise lost season. The Chargers (4-8) were all but eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday, when they lost 22-16 at home to the Atlanta Falcons while the Denver Broncos (7-5) were winning their third straight road game, 34-17 against the New York Jets.

Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff plans to continue working to whittle down the team's potentially large free agent class. The team signed wide receiver Michael Jenkins and defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux to four- and five-year contract extensions on Tuesday. The Falcons have 11 more players, including linebacker Michael Boley, cornerback Domonique Foxworth, defensive end Chauncey Davis and punter Michael Koenen, who can become unrestricted free agents after the season. The team is currently in talks with several of the players and might have more contract extensions before the end of the season.
